A Short Guide to Wearing Shorts.

The dry season has here, and hellish hours in traffic and the public desire to wear loose fitting clothing came with the season like clockwork. Scratch desire, there’s a need to wear loose fitting outfits this period.

Now, one outfit that has become essential to street style is shorts. Wearing shorts can fill even the most stylish person with fear — and it’s very understandable, as a lot can go wrong in shorts time. But we have got steps that could guide you when switching to shorts this period.

Find the right Urbanity for you

Everyone has a different style to shorts. Some people like tailored shorts, and there are people who would only stick to streetwear-friendly frayed denim. Both are more than acceptable, and luckily there are multiple variations in-between.

To make sure you’re comfortable, match your shorts to your preferred style of dressing during the warmer months. So, conservative dressers can go with classic cotton-fabric shorts, casual dressers can opt for denim or chino shorts and risk-takers can go for the inbetweens of bold and daring. There’s always a style for everyone. You only need to set your eyes on comfortability and the statement it would make when you step out.

Know your Bod

Dress for the build you have, not the build you want — a style worth remembering whatever the item. In other words: if it doesn’t suit you, maybe leave it alone?

When it comes to shorts, this means identifying your leg shape and choosing accordingly. If you’re conscious of having thicker thighs, a darker colour can slim you down by eliminating shadow, whereas a bold print can help hide more slender legs.

Those lucky enough to boast in-between, averagely-sized legs however, can experiment with colour and print as they see fit.

Lengths Matter

Unlike the style, there’s less wiggle room with length. Too short, and you’re going to risk being asked to leave family establishments; too long, and you may as well crack open that tin of spinach and boot up Super Mario right now.

You should grail for the sweet spot: the inches of space above your knee, but below your mid-thigh. Landing here will ensure the wider outfit remains in proportion. Don’t forget to add a turn up if the stitching of the hem allows.

Shorts Follow Trends too

Granted, there are only so many ways to rejig shorts without settling for hot pants. (Which no one should ever do, by the way).

That doesn’t mean trends don’t apply, though. Call Me By Your Name-esque vertical stripes are still relevant in 2021 or try a shade of pink a la Travis Scott Wale Design Shorts, or Needle Butterfly Shorts Black, or Cactus jack short Black, or Kapital Beach Short Mixmatch. It’s a season to be bold with colours, after all.

Shorts and Socks go together.

When the sun soars, layer reduction is the aim of the game — except when it comes to your feet. In short, unless you’re in slides or sandals, never forget socks.

The invisible kind are preferable to gym and ankle socks: they’ll cover the soles of your feet and toes, but remain hidden once sneakered. But if you’d rather stick to normal length socks, ensure they stay monochrome so as to not distract from the look you have put together. Unless your outfit is monochrome, then let your sock game blossom with beautiful patterns and designs.

Swim Shorts are Good Choices

Swim shorts can work on dry land. Just know that it isn’t an easy plank to walk.

First, apply the aforementioned length rule. Then factor in the print. That includes any floral patterns better-suited to the poolside. There’s also the option to go dark and classic.
